CONTENTMENT IS A GIFT FROM GOD


1 Corinthians 2:12-14, “What we have received is not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may understand what God has freely given us. This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual realities with Spirit-taught words. The person without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God but considers them foolishness, and cannot understand them because they are discerned only through the Spirit.”

We are often blind to our blessings because of carnal considerations. You are likely to fail to appreciate what you have if you focus on what you don’t have materially. We are likely to be robbed of contentment when we don’t have spiritual discernment. Spiritual blessings cannot be discerned by material eyes or measured by material things.

There are three enemies of contentment: comparing, competing and complaining. Disappointment is the sickness of the heart and comes as a consequence of shifting focus from the things of the Spirit to the things of the flesh. If you measure success by material things, you will find yourself in an endless cycle of comparing yourself to a standard you can never attain, competing for a prize that you can never gain, and complaining about things you can never obtain. Comparison is so destructive because it is based on what is seen, the material, the performance, rather than the truth.

Apostle Paul said in Philippians 4:12, “I have learnt the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want,” because he did not allow his situation to mislead him to disappointment, no matter how challenging things got in the physical. So let us remember that whatever God permits us to face is unto our good. That is why we can face disappointment without being disappointed.

Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, help me to avoid the traps that can rob me of contentment. Help me to look at my circumstances with a look of faith, knowing that Your plan for me is good. In Jesus’ name, amen.
