Joshua 24:15, “But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”
God’s commitment to us has never been and will never be partial, half-hearted or lukewarm. He is the God who never closes His eyes on us (Psalm 121:3-4), His love endures forever (Romans 8:38-39) and He promises to never leave us nor forsake us (John 14:16, Hebrews 13:5). There is no greater demonstration of God’s total commitment and love for us in that while we were still sinners Christ died for us (Romans 5:8).
How should we respond to this great love? As God has given us His best, we too should give Him our best – give Him your quality time, not just the time that’s convenient or easy to give. Battles to the flesh may be beneficial for your spirit; what is hard for the flesh may be helpful for your spirit. If you serve God only at your convenience, then your service will lack commitment. If your commitment to God is partial and you’re serving God only at your convenience, when you are confronted with a situation where your faith in Christ conflicts with traditional belief, cultural expectations, the pressures of position or the affairs of this world, you are likely to remain indifferent or sit on the fence, especially when acting faith involves some pain or sacrifice. What starts with complacency will soon end with compromise and the road to compromise is never-ending and ever widening. So when it comes to the service of God, we must be wholehearted and our commitment should be total, not partial.
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, help me to choose what is right in Your sight at all times. Restore to me a right focus to serve You totally and grant me a willing spirit to sustain me. In Jesus’ Name, amen.
