1 Corinthians 7:29-31, “But this I say, brethren, the time is short, so that from now on even those who have wives should be as though they had none, those who weep as though they did not weep, those who rejoice as though they did not rejoice, those who buy as though they did not possess, and those who use this world as not misusing it. For the form of this world is passing away.”

We thank God for the multitude of His mercies that we have experienced in the outgoing year, and we believe you are looking forward to seeing the fulfilment of what God has put in your heart to do for 2026. Today marks a moment of self-examination as we reflect and ask ourselves these important questions: what really makes the year new? Throughout the year 2025, you have heard many sermons and read the Bible – but what will make that Word fruitful in 2026? It is not the year that makes us new – we make it new by the way we live it. The evidence that God’s Word lives in us is the way we live.

Have you held onto many worries in 2025 that prevented the Word bearing fruit in your life – worries about money, position, possessions? Apostle Paul gave an important warning in 1 Corinthians 7:29-31 to be aware of unhealthy attachments to the things of this world. When you form an unhealthy attachment to the fleeting and fading things of this world, you will be disturbed by worry, deceived by wealth and distracted by wants, thus choking the fruitfulness of God’s Word in your life. The problem is not with His Word – the problem is within you.

Start this year by identifying and surrendering unhealthy attachments because if you are too attached to it, don’t be surprised that you will be attacked through it and easily be disturbed by it. If you are too attached to the things of this world, rather than use them, you will be used by them and you will end up misusing them.

Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, give me the grace to detach from every ungodly attachment in my life and to manage my resources and relationships in a manner that honours You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
