Luke 12:15, “And He said to them, ‘Take heed and beware of covetousness, for one’s life does not consist in the abundance of the things he possesses.’”

People of God, we are living in a world where many buy the wicked lie that life really does consist in the abundance of their possessions. As it was, so it is. That is why our Lord Jesus Christ warned against the sin of coveting – the fleshly desire for something that belongs to someone else that kicks you down the empty road to discontentment. What leads us there is the trap of comparison – it fuels covetousness, thus robbing you of contentment.

The lie of the world is the more you get, the more fulfilled you are but the reality is, the more you get, the more frustrated you become because what you get, that you think will fulfil you, will only end up raising the bar higher. Never forget that no amount of treasure can rescue a troubled heart. Without the fear of the Lord, if you seek treasure you will find trouble – if you live for treasure you will end up living in trouble. If you live for pleasure you will end up living in pain.

So take a moment of self-examination and ask yourself these important questions: on a day-to-day basis what drives your decisions? What motivates your movements? What prompts your priorities? Is it the treasures of the world or the fear of the Lord?

We are to live in the world without the world living in us. How can you make a difference in the world if you are driven by the things of this world? A believer’s driving force is purpose, not profit. God’s purpose is to be pursued as you remember that you were born and created for His glory, not your own.

Prayer: Lord Jesus, thank You for Your purpose in my life and Your peace in my heart. Help me to find contentment in You alone. In Jesus’ name, amen.
