Psalm 142:3, “When my spirit was overwhelmed within me, then You knew my path.”
When David penned this Psalm, he was hiding from Saul and his murderous mission unjustly focused toward him. However, in crying out to God, he chose not to complain that he was being hounded by the enemy and surrounded by the threat of death. Instead, in that cave, he focused on the fact that God was with Him. The comfort of God’s presence in the midst of his situation trumped the fear of any secret snare that may have been planted by the enemy along his path.
People of God, what do you do when you face unfavourable situations? Do your prayers list your concerns and direct God in how He should resolve them as if He is unaware of your position? Or do you thank God that He knows your path and will not leave you without the direction, instruction and revelation that you need to pass through them? The degree to which the situations of life overwhelm you reflects the degree to which God’s Word dominates you. David’s reaction to his challenge in that cave was a clear reflection that although he was physically insecure, he was spiritually stable.
A consciousness of Christ’s presence in the midst of your situation will give you the courage to face whatever God permits to happen to you. What we are giving our attention to is the very thing that robs us of rest. If situations overwhelm you to fear, doubt, lamenting, grumbling, complaining, anxiety or worry – check your heart; that is a reflection that God’s Word is not dominating your heart.
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, I thank You that You are with me. Give me the courage to focus on Your presence in the midst of my challenge rather than the natural circumstance of life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
