James 4:13-14, “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit’; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.”
When you look at what’s happening in the world today – a world where natural disasters unexpectedly strike, terminal illnesses suddenly invade healthy immune systems and violence quickly turns to volatile wars – we are forced to come face to face with the frailty of our humanity. In moments such as this, a fundamental question runs through our hearts: What happens when this life is over?
Are you afraid of death? Can you approach the subject of eternity with a sense of certainty? Or does the realisation of your mortality fill you with a sense of dread? No matter how strong you seem to be, no matter how secure you claim to be, the reality of life’s fragility will one day strike.
Here is a powerful truth: The fear of death can only be conquered by the One who has conquered death – Jesus Christ! You do not need to fear when you know where you are going. So the question is, are you ready to meet your Maker? Have you surrendered to the One who secures your future? Problems arise when we are more afraid of death than we are of sin. But if you genuinely accept Jesus as your Lord, commit yourself to a relationship with Him, you will be ready to die in a world where we do not know what tomorrow holds. And if you are ready to die, you are ready to live.
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, give me the grace to live each day as if it were my last – knowing the reality of my frailty. I surrender to You today and ask for the strength to maintain my commitment. In Jesus’ name, amen.
