Psalm 101:3, “I will set nothing wicked before my eyes; I hate the work of those who fall away; it shall not cling to me.”
People of God, everyone has a weakness. David, the author of this Psalm, understood that the identification of weakness is a reason for watchfulness. He knew that what he looked at could influence his will and open a door to temptation that may be beyond his power to close – so resolved to be careful of what he set before his eyes. He knew that in guarding his eyes, he would starve his weakness and feed his strength.
What are you setting before your eyes, your ears, your heart? This is the real issue! What you set your heart on will set you up to succumb or to overcome. Many people fall into the trap of flirting with sin, instead of fleeing from it. If you flirt with sin, it is just a matter of time before you fall into it. If you toy with sin, it will soon trap you because the journey from your heart to your hands is shorter than you realise.
Job too understood this principle. That is why he said, in Job 31:1, “I have made a covenant with my eyes; why then should I look upon a young woman?” He made a covenant with his eyes to keep his covenant with God. The world tries to dilute God’s standards so that you become casual in your covenant with God and careless in your conduct with temptation.
Don’t allow your weakness to wound you. What must you do? When you set your heart on the things above and flee from sin, temptation will come but you will overcome with the help of the Holy Spirit. Always remember that your weakness is a reason to flee from sin, not an excuse to flirt with sin. Position yourself today for the Holy Spirit to help your weakness and He will.
Prayer: Lord Jesus Christ, give me the grace to turn away from that which would turn me away from You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
